Hi Guys,
Well, I finally over wrote the Default Cessna Sounds in FS98 and re-engineered my own DC-3 Sounds.

It was not easy I can tell you. !!!! Quite some hard work.

First of all you have to keep in mind that FS98 Sounds reportedly cause 17% loss of frame rate in the sim, so the objective was to make to keep the same Byte size as the Default Cessna Sounds. Not only that, but to keep them in a Stereo format and CD quality too. These were all recorded using Win95's sound recorder with its full use of pull down menus for editing, mixing, volume range and also properties for quality of sound.

When editing your own sounds for props you have to also keep in mind that the Default Cessna sounds have 2 Idle sounds for inside the cockpit, and....2 idle sounds for outside the cockpit. One idle sound is slightly faster in speed than the other.

The idle Cessna sounds for inside the cockpit are...

Ceidle.wav (slow idle)
Ce1.wav (fast idle)

The idle Cessna sounds for outside the aircraft (these are a tad louder in volume) are....

Xceidle.wav (slow idle)
Xce1.wav (fast idle).

Now we come to the prop/cruise sounds for the Cessna. There are 3 inside cockpit sounds and these are slow cruise, medium cruise, and full power. Add to this that the same applies for outside the aircraft too in that there are also 3 prop/cruise sounds, slow cruise, medium cruise and full power.

You have to keep in mind that wind sounds are added for the inside cockpit sounds whilst the outside of the aircraft sounds have no wind edited into them. Also keep in mind that the outside sounds are a tad louder than they are inside.

The following Cessna sounds are for inside the cockpit..........

Ce2.wav (slow cruise)
Ce3.wav (medium cruise)
Ce4.wav (full power)

And the following Cessna sounds (these are a tad louder in volume) are for outside the aircraft.....

Xce2.wav (slow cruise)
Xce3.wav (medium cruise)
Xce4.wav (full power)

Thats 10 sounds inside and outside for the one type of aircraft. !!!!

I also took the Landing gear sounds from FS95 (up and down) because I prefer those to the new ones in FS98. I think the FS95 Landing gear sounds are more realistic.
I overwrote the existing FS98 gear sounds with these but found I had to decrease the volume a tad.

The screetch sounds for the Cessna are quite good for the DC-3 too in that FS98 has 3 different screetches (one for each wheel). Each wheel has its own pitch to the screetch and with each screetch you can hear the airframe rattling. Not only that but the right wjeel screetch will come out from the right speaker and so on........ All I did here was to raise the volume a tad by mixing in the same wav file over itself. ( the DC-3 is heavier than the Cessna so I felt the need to do this).

That left me with the FS98 'Wind" sound (wind3.wav) which I had to reduce in volume by quite a bit because I thought it was a little loud, add to this that I also have wind sounds mixed into my inside cockpit cruise sounds anyhow.

That left me with a file for FS98 DC-3 sounds that contained 12 wav files. (not including the 3 screetch.wav files)

I used real sounds from the real thing from a choice of Video Cassettes during my flights, cassette tapes and a CD I have.
These will be uploaded soon as DC3FS98S.zip

This I have been working with for a while and through my Yamaha 45 watt 3 piece speaker set...with sub woofer, they are quite incredible indeed. Very good too for those with a 2 speaker system.
Remember..for those of you, who want to make slight adjustments (mainly because of there speaker set up). Try experimenting with the Aircraft Sound editor within FS98 were you can adjust volumes for inside and outside the aircraft etc...

For those of you who do custom prop sounds or who want to experiment, I will upload this as a text file. As for Jet sounds...I have no idea on those <g> but I imagine its done the same way.

Regards....... Trev [Staff]
